Over 100 Served by Crisis Stabilization Unit for Children

The Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) at St. Joseph’s Villa is the first and only unit of its kind in Central Virginia to serve children and adolescents ages 5 to 17 experiencing a mental health crisis.  Since opening in May 2012 in partnership with the Richmond Behavioral Health Authority, the CSU has served more than 100 children in crisis.

Children who need short-term, out-of-home placement are able to stay in the CSU and receive treatment by qualified mental health professionals for up to 15 consecutive days.  It allows families to keep their children closer to home and avoid the much higher costs of an unnecessary hospitalization.

The CSU provides a therapeutic, nurturing environment for recovery; a fully equipped recreational room is designed to give children a feeling homeliness.

The CSU is licensed and credentialed by the Virginia Department of Mental Health and Developmental Services.  Read how it helped one family in the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

We thank our community partners for recognizing the need and helping us provide this vital service to so many children and families.
