A mental health crisis occurs when a person’s behaviors or symptoms pose a risk of harm to themselves or others, or interfere with their ability to care for themselves or function effectively.
For instance, if a child or teenager experiences significant disruptions in eating or sleeping, or struggles to complete a school day, they may be in or nearing a mental health crisis. This type of crisis may also involve suicidal thoughts, though not always. Crises often arise from stress, negative emotions, or response to trauma.
Our 24/7 Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) provides immediate care for youth ages 5 to 17, and their families. In partnership with Richmond Behavioral Health Authority and Region 4, our goal is to reduce the impact of a crisis by preventing hospitalization and keeping youth in their communities.
The CSU is an 8-bed, unlocked residential facility offering short-term placement for up to 15 consecutive days. Located on the south side of our campus, the CSU provides a safe and therapeutic environment designed to facilitate de-escalation and stabilization.

Mental health issues can directly affect the atmosphere of the family, which is why family participation is an essential part of our program. We engage both the youth and the family to uncover the root of the crisis, working together to build an effective support network. Youth and family members have daily access to video conferencing with a licensed child and adolescent psychiatrist. We also connect families with community resources for a smooth transition after discharge.
We provide crisis stabilization services to youth ages 5 to 17 residing in Region 4 of Virginia. Youth must meet at least two of the following criteria at the time of admission:
