John seemed like a typical child for the first few years of his life – but around age four, everything changed. When he was diagnosed with autism, it quickly became clear to his mother, Linda, that he would need specialized support. She explored every option for his education, but finding a place that truly understood his needs proved much more difficult than she expected.
John’s early school experiences were met with frustration. He had to leave preschool due to behavioral challenges, and while a county program was recommended, it lacked the individual support he needed. Over time, John’s struggles became more pronounced. One Thanksgiving, overwhelmed by emotion, he asked, “What do I have to do to feel good again?” He hardly ate or spoke in the weeks that followed. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and an already difficult situation suddenly felt impossible.
Despite being identified as a student with special needs, John was slipping through the cracks. During a time when resources and private services were stretched thin, Linda didn’t know where to turn – until she discovered Dooley School at St. Joseph’s Villa.
“The moment we stepped onto campus, I knew this was the right place for John,” Linda said. “Other schools had programs, but there was no coordination between them. The Villa brings it all together. Every aspect of John’s education and care is connected here.”
Now in his third year at Dooley School, John has progressed in ways Linda once only hoped for. He has built strong relationships with his teachers and found a love for learning. Outside of school one day, John turned to his mother and said, “I like school, even when it’s hard.”
Linda immediately texted his teachers, who excitedly shared in the moment.
“John is very verbal and social, just not always in ways people expect,” said Linda. “The Villa meets him where he is, helps him express his thoughts, and gives him tools to connect with others. That had always been a source of frustration for him.”
Unlike previous experiences where John’s needs were misunderstood or overlooked, Linda feels like a true partner at the Villa. In her close collaboration with staff, she has seen John take responsibility for his feelings, work through problems step by step, and independently manage everyday tasks like walking safely from the car to the school building.
“There are so many talented people at the Villa who teach with heart. They combine knowledge with deep compassion, and that’s what has truly inspired John.”
